Omnia i900
Hi guys, here are some improvements of the i8000 on the I900.
The menu's can be moved and customized and/or placed where ever you want to place them. I like that.
If there are other improvements you guys need info from me on the new i8000 up from the i900 let me know so I may list them here for you, and let me know if you require a screen shots too.
I have updated my i900 & i8000 with the Garmin SAS Mobile street maps 2010.1, and previously there was an issue with the backlight (Garmin Maps backlight override). For example, if the backlight of the phone dims and or switches off after set time (Phone preferences), the Garmin maps do as well. There is a preference setting in the Garmin maps which allows one to set and override this. It is located at Tools/Setting/Display/Backlight Override. There are four options available here:
1) Always On
2) On When Charging
3) On When Navigating
4) On When Speaking
The only way to get the maps to stay up without the backlight switching off is to use option 1. 2, 3 and 4, do not work even on the 2010 Maps.
Please note that this update is only intended for the following Samsung handsets:
- Omnia I900
- I8910HD
- I8000
This is a full download (application and maps).
If you only want the street maps, you may download them here.
Hello fellow Samung i900 owners
I think you may all agree with me in stating that the Omnia has been deserted by Samsung !
There has not been any software upgrades, nor any hint of 1, the latest Garmin maps have been available for a long time now, but nothing from Samsung, the Omnia hardware is capable of Windows 6.5 (others have downloaded and installed modified versions which work), but there is still nothing in the pipeline for what is 1 of the best selling smartphones ever ???
When you follow the blog post about the Omnia firmware upgrade dating back to last year you realise there are still people who are expecting more upgrades, or even the ability to install a Samsung supported WM 6.5 OS.
I think all owners of the original Omnia (like myself ) should accept that there will probably be no more firmware upgrades from Samsung, or the ability to install WM 6.5. I know there are people who say they have installed modified versions of 6.5 on their phones, but I'm pretty sure their phones would not be reliable anymore.
If you want a mobile phone running WM6.5 or even the new 7, it's obviously time to upgrade your hardware.
When it first came out some reviewers complained about the Omnia's stylus not having a place of safety somewhere on the phone, but that fact didn't worry me...until I lost it. I was a bit shocked when I was told at a well known cellphone shop that a replacement was going to cost me R250, but after briefly considering buying a cheap generic one I decided to go with the original Samsung. Needless to say I was now going to be very careful not to lose it, (and has luck would have it, I found the one I thought I had lost as well).
First let me say that I can't function without this phone, and list some of the things I love about it.
- I love that I can capture details about callers (like home address), simply by making a note when the call is finished. (Which also automatically makes their phone number a hot link in the note).
- That the screen seems to be (almost) scratch proof.
- That the SMS app is really easy to use, and that they are 'threaded'.
- That the phone reminds me about birthdays and wakes me up in the morning.
- That I can store all my music on it. I don't have a huge amount like my son does.
- The GPS, which I use every day and it works really well. I can't remember when I last used my map book.
(I just wish I could highlight an address in notes, and the GPS would load up and get me there). - The Widgets, I keep the ones I use all the time like the clock, notes, and phonebook on the desktop screen.
I've been using my Omnia as a modem for some time now and it gives good bandwidth if you can connect to a 3G+ tower. To set it up it's best if you have Bluetooth on your computer, (I've had bad connection problems using the cable).
First launch 'Internet Sharing' on your phone and select Bluetooth Pan and whichever connection your service provider has for internet connections. Now select 'connect' and your phone should log onto the internet. Now go to your computer's Bluetooth menu and select 'Join a Personal Area Network' i.e. a PAN. Your phone should be shown as an access point, if not do a search for Bluetooth devices. Once connected you can still use your phone to make and take calls and because there is no cable you won't have to worry about dropping the connection.
I finally writing a post, laziness, i got a omnia (personally think it the best phone to date).
I have found lot Omnia software on the net and wanna share.
1* install Open Firmware. The network one is beyond bad. 1) it looks like it been put together by a junior programmer, 2) you can't get to all your programs, they're just not there 3) the network help centre just can't help, 4) the internet is locked to this one network so if you go on holiday to another country or put in a different sim - no internet.
2* install Skyfire internet browser. It plays ALL flash videos on any web site (Adobe?)
3* install Cleartemp. This program clears space on the internal memory 2 speed up your phone (if your phone seems slow, this is for you).
I will post more apps and links at later date .
Garmin recently released new maps for SA, "Garmap Africa Series 2009 2'nd Edition" - Garmap SAS 2009 TMC, any idea when this will be available for download from Samsung.
