Touch screen phones will be the standard very soon

I want to make a prediction. I can see that phones with bottoms would NOT last very long. Touch screen is here and will be the standard very soon.

I look at Samsung’s range and I see that more and more of their handsets are becoming touch screen phones. For me a hardware keyboard takes up space on the phone so for me a big screen is better than a smaller screen with a hardware keyboard. There are some that say that the reason they do not prefer a touch screen is because the keyboard is too small on a touch screen. Look at some of these phones out there, the keys are small then the touch screen. This argument has no basis. I use my finger on my i900 to type on the touch screen keyboard, without using the stylus. I do not have small fingers either.

Touch screen is the future and is here to stay. Hardware keyboards as we know them will very soon be a thing of the past. The fact that more and more of Samsung's handsets becoming touch screen proves that the consumers prefer touch screens. Just look at the evidence, the most popular phone and most units sold worldwide are touch screen phones.

Now I do not have the figure for South Africa, however I am very sure the touch screen phone out sell and of Samsung's phones with keyboards.

Touchscreen phones

I'm not sure if your prediction will come true Virtue, but I also dislike hardware keyboards on mobiles. The ones I hate the most are those little cramped ones on the Blackberry's. They're not only impractical, but ugly too.

Samsung touch screens

For me it really depends on the phone. I love the on-screen keyboard on the I8910 HD but less crazy about the ones on any screen smaller than that one (3.7"). The Samsung C6625 hardware keyboard feels quite good and I imagine the B7330 has the same sized keyboard. I don't mind these at all.

Virtue's absolutely correct; Samsung has taken on full touch screens and in a big way. The Samsung Star sold over 10 million units last year. Over 50 million Samsung touchscreen phones in total were sold in the same period. That's massive! More are expected to be shipped this year.

Touchscreen vs. keyboard

With all due respect vs. other people's references, keyboards are NOT going anywhere. Yes, you are right, touchscreens have conquered far and wide indeed, but no current touchscreen technology (including the half-assed "haptic" attempts) comes close to real keys. I raise just three points to support this:
- How come there are more full-qwerty models today than ever before?
- Have you seen the iPhone stick-on "pressable" adapter thingy...? 'nuff said.
- You must have heard of laser projector-keyboards - cigarette pack size device, instant full keyboard size surface - quite practical, and yes, they are available. How come nobody is really keen on using them...?
In short: People really like their keys press-able. As do I - actually, one of my main issues selecting a new phone a while ago was that it could not be a touchscreen phone. I actually ended up with a Samsung GT-i7110 and am quite happy with it - non-Nokia S60 issues aside (don't ever get me started on those...).

Touchscreen vs. keyboard

The reason why "Qwerty" keys is used because people are sick of the many key presses they have to use the text and so on.....

Many people are still used to keys and you know people they do not want to change unless they have to, the ones like you and me that have used touch screen phones will never go back. I do not have an issues with actual keys other than as long as my screen size is not smaller than 3.7". Keys take up space hence the fact I choice not to have actual keys for have to put up with small or a smaller screen. On screen keyboard is big, even bigger in landscape mode, much bigger then keys on most phones with a "Qwerty " keys.

Once again I have seen my friends, as soon as they used a touch screen phone they got used to the idea and never look back. So the one that do not use it yet will soon!
