Follow-up review of i8910HD

As stated in my earlier Handset review here's my follow-up review of the i8910HD. After having owned the phone for about a month now and learning all it's features I can now give a more indepth review.

The phones screen is gorgeous especially compared to other new touch screen phones. Colours are deep and rich while blacks are as dark as the Marianas Trench. It must be said though that eligibility in direct sunlight is not that good but if you position the phone a certain way it can be improved. The screen is very responsive requiring only slight gestures to get things done. The screen seems to be quite scratch resistant although I haven't thoroughly tested this one out...

The hardware in this phone is just great. Actually the IPhone 3GS has the same processor and GPU(graphics processor) as this phone however the I8910HD will utilize the power more due to the HD record and playback.
You may have noticed that I say "will" utilize the powerfull hardware. Currently there are a few issues with the firmware. It has been reported that while the video capability is 720/24p it really only manages 22 frames per second and I have found this to be the case. It makes for slightly choppy recording but still looks great when played back on your HD TV set. The other minor problem with video recording is that it there is no dynamic auto focus and as a result some of my videos have been a bit blurry.

The camera is excellent capturing nice colourful pictures. I like the feature that allows me to set the picture size to widescreen format so that when pics are viewed on my laptop or TV set they fit the screen perfectly. There are a whole host of features that you can choose from that makes taking pictures really fun. Only slight speed issues are present when using the camera but this can be optimized. More on this in the next paragraph.

So we know that the harware and general build quality is excellent, so what's not making this phone all it can be? Well as mentioned a few times the firmware is letting this device down. The phone is not as fast as it should be considering the hardware specs, there are also some instability issues, and it lacks some basic features that many other smartphones have as standard. For example the Samsung Jet has kinetic scrolling which the I8910HD doesn't have. In regards to the stability issues, I restarted the phone one day and it would not start up again. It just froze on the splash screen and would'nt respond no matter what I did. I had to pull out the battery and try again. This went on for two days until I managed to get it started.

All is not doom and gloom though as all of the above mentioned issues can and will be addressed through firmware updates although not in the next one due for relaease soon. See http://tinyurl.com/I8910-firmware-update for details.

All said and done the phone is great with even more potential to be spectacular!
I look forward to more good times with the phone.

Sunlight

I suppose this phone has better display than most other phones in the sun because of the AMOLED display? When I reviewed the Jet which AMOLED technology, the quality of the display did drop but the screen content was still better than a normal TFT screen.

Screen quality

Well there are some youtube clips that demonstrate the difference between the Iphone, i8910HD and the Hero or something. The Iphone was better in the sunlight and the other two were about the same. However the I8910HD is far superior indoors!

i8910 Update

I am also waiting for that elusive firmware update.

Screen quality in sunlight

I have the i900 Omnia and the screen is bad in sunlight, but what I don't get is how any screen can be that good in full sun. Is the iphone that much better? To me the only way to improve legibility is to increase the back-light, and nothing flattens batteries like bright back-lights.

Screen

I had the N95 before the I8910 and it's screen could be read in direct sunlight very well. Wasn't touch though so no glass or plastic to reflect so much!
