Second Life on Samsung phones

A Second Life client will be available on Samsung phones very soon. This was the revelation at CTIA Wireless 2008 convention last week. For those who aren't familiar with Second Life, here's a brief explanation.

SL, as it's most affectionately referred by its residents, is a 3D virtual world where players basically create a second life, thus the name :) As a player, you create your character (avatar) and can change how it (s/he?) looks. People actually exchange money (the currency is known as Linden dollars) so you can buy/rent property, buy clothes, buy hairstyles, donate to groups, get paid to fill in "real-life" surveys, etc. Some people have even made it their full-time job.

SL Residents chat to each other, make friends, have relationships, visit islands, form groups and so on. There are events such as movie reviews, classes, etc. of which some are free to attend. I love a group called Irie Vibes where they play the most wikkid tunes while you (or your avatar, anyway) pull off some impressive dance moves.

It should be really interesting how they adapt this game for the mobile environment. The screen is certainly smaller than a computer screen and controls...well 2,4,6,8 and a nav key could work. needless to say, a data bundle would be the best option here. It should be stated that Samsung already owns an island on Second Life where they promote their handsets. They apparently ask you to answer a few questions (in Japanese!) after which you are given a mobile phone to use in SL. Be sure to check it out next time you visit this fascinating virtual world.
