New Samsung Omnia phones and Windows Mobile 6.5

The new suite of Samsung Omnia phones will support Windows Mobile 6.5 . What's more, the Samsung Omnia Lite B7300 will ship with this version while the Samsung OmniaPRO B7610 and OmniaPRO B7320 B7330 will ship with WM 6.1 which will be upgradeable to WM 6.5 (free).

Some of you have asked if the currently available Samsung Omnia (i900) will be upgradeable to WM 6.5. This will unfortunately not happen as the I900 hardware was not built to support this version of the operating system.

Umm..

So those of us who spent a few thousand Rand on the Omnia basically forked out money for something which is about as future-proof as... say... current Omnia owners' sense of humour after reading this post? ;)

Windows

Sounds cool. Can I get windows for my F480

WM 6.5 will upgradeable not possible for the i900 Omina?

I can’t believe that this is true; if it is then I look like Samsung caught us for a sucker. I will come back with feedback on this soon; I’ll make sure about this.

6.5

As with any new windows, will this also have that odd bug?

The above statement is a load of rubbish. I have been running a version of WM6.5 (Version released by Microsoft and modified for the i900 for the last 6 months and there have been no problems. Trust me it is NOT just a GUI change, it is the full proper WM6.5 released from MS.

How can Samsung try and talk to us as if we are idiots. Are you telling me that your processors have changed so much and technology so much that you can run WM6.5 on the i900? Rubbish!!!! How come HTC and others are running it on slower Hardware and processors?

You just dont want to waste R&D on the i900 as it will prevent sales of your newer handsets. What about being honest for a change SAMSUNG?

No WM 6.5 update for i900 Omnia

Hi Lourens,

Read the updated post at http://www.samsunghub.com/2009/09/16/samsung-netherlands-omnia-i900-due-...

WM 6.5 won't be available for the Omnia i900.... not officially anyway.

I so hope that this is true... highly doubt it though.

Well guess there aren't

Well guess there aren't enough of us to stop using Samsung phones to make any difference to them. There are new faces in the commercial world daily and they will replace the faces that used to use Samsung and no longer do. So, it really doesn't bother them!!

no upgrade to wm 6.5 for "old" i900?

That's great! This really pisses me off especially when the staff at Samsung Vodaworld kept telling me over the past few months that the WM 6.5 upgrade for the Omnia i900 will be available shortly. That's why I bought the phone in the first place! My house is literally filled with Samsung appliances.
If this is the case then this phone was the last Samsung product I will ever purchase!
Conned again by money-hungry corporates. This sounds like Ford and not Samsung! I hope Adrianc is on to something here as this news just screwed up my day!

No Omnia i900 WM 6.5 Upgrade

What has probably happened is that Microsoft would want payment for the upgrade and Samsung said ## ##### - especially for hardware that has a 2 year life.

Strange, cos I was in an

Strange, cos I was in an exhibition in Singapore this week where the new "windows phone" (aka 6.5) was being shown off. People manning the samsung AND Acer stand told me that sometime early Nov there would be a 6.5 update for the i900. (I thus consider this a valid source as they were representing both Samsung and MS - thus now expect it to happen)

Why are there so many versions of this story - Samsung, just get your act together and give the i900 users the update we expect!

I just don't understand why phone manufacturers don't anticipate phone OS upgrades... What's the point of buying a phone on a 2 year contract when you can't upgrade the OS during the life of your contract.. It's absolute rubbish that the phone can't run WM 6.5. You can download plenty of ROM's for WM 6.5 for the I900 that run 100 % fine.

With my luck my contract will finish before WM 7 is released and my new phone won't be upgradeable to WM 7...

Maybe it's time to start looking at another phone manufacturer for my upgrade (Nokia, Apple or maybe even HTC)...

Just adding my 2 cents to this debate.

No upgrade

I think it sucks one spent so much money on i900 to be told there is no upgrade. This will be my last samsung mobile ever.

When will these new phones ship

When will the B7320 and other phones mentioned here ship in South Africa?

Samsung B7330 release

Hi abe,

The B7320 will not be released in South Africa but rather the B7330, which will be launched this month (March 2010).

WM6.5 is available for Omnia i900

There is no current upgrade path from the service providers which normally supply it to the public via this blog or on some web space for free and by your own/self installation.
But if you call Samsung in South Africa and go through to the Mobile department they can direct you where to get a WM6.5 upgrade. This will unfortunately cost time and material from the Samsung service centre.

Nice thing about the Service centre upgrade is that it does not have the damn SP crap on it.

Later dudes.
