Omnia thrashed by the Iphone
Submitted by SHSguy (not verified) on Wed, 2009-10-14 16:56.The Samsung Omnia promised customers to be the "IPhone Killer" well everyday I look at my Omnia on the desk bleeding and bruised there wasn't much of a fight on Samsung's side.
Today I saw their attempt at a APP store not much too look at and only available in three countries and South Africa is not one of them. I think the worst thing about the Omnia is the Windows OS which makes what should be easy like downloading apps very hard, Iphones with the same amount of storage 16g is is able to download more and is much, much more pleasing to the eye.
Today's poll asks which operating systems our phones uses what does that help it should be what OS do you want your phone to have... my answer anything but windows.
Can anyone at Samsung tell me if they can give me a refund so I can go and get the IPhone and for all the mental anguish they have caused maybe a free blueray player

I live in Richards Bay, and have recently received my Omnia.
I got it on contract from MTN. I phoned MTN Direct on 083 123 3667, and everything was done over the phone.
The contract is R319-00 per month, and I get R200-00 airtime, with 25 free sms's.
Hope this helps...

I started with Samsung since the D410...never looked back.
Got my wife hooked too....:)Getting her an F480.
PS.F700 with MTN has some download app issues. Will check with your call center on support issues but heads up to check why people can't download mxit or any other app (gmail upgrade?;opera mini as recommended by this site?) on to this phone??? Bit of a boo boo there?
F700
Submitted by MXit_Team on Mon, 2008-09-29 11:14.Greetings,
This phone did have issues when it first came out.
With the older firmware on this phone, it did not support java so you are unable to download java apps onto this phone.
Later Samsung included java on this handset, so the people who had the older firmware just had to go for a firmware upgrade and they could get MXit running.

I must say I am impressed with the Omnia by Samsung. I am actually an Apple fan and would prefer to use their iPhone but the Omnia won me over. My only concern is that Omnia runs on windows 6.1 and it is inferior by far to MacOS. But then again, it has a lot more features and better download speed than the iPhone and its better value for money. I had also had a look at the F480, in fact, I think aesthetically it's nicer looking than the i900 Omnia but has no push e-mail. Mmm, you may also want to get your wife the i900 after all.

Always on mind lately
Submitted by detoo on Wed, 2008-10-22 14:33.I have always been a Nokis fan. Recently though, Samsung has always been on mind, beginning with the i780 (cos I have only got so much to spend on a cellphone) and recently the i900 Omnia. I was on GSM Arena website, which I always frequent, some time in June checking out all the latest gadgets out there and those coming out when I saw the news regarding the Omnia. I ended up spending quite some time there pouring over the specs.
Although my first preference in make has always been Nokia, Samsung has always been a close second and who knows, may one day overtake nokia. I have bought a couple of Samsung phones before: I bought the Z500 - one of Samsung's first (if not the first) 3G cellphone to hit SA, back in 2005. I used it for only a few days though before giving it to my then girlfriend (now wife) who enjoyed it immensely. Never gave her any hiccups, and we would show off to others by video-calling each other several times a day whenever the opportunity to impress arose: rang up some sizeable bills with MTN whom I was with at the time.
I ported to Vodacom in January and was torn between the Samsung G800, Nokia 6110 Navigator and SonyEricsson K850i. I was given the K850i but returned it the next day despite its 5mega pixel camera: just didnt feel right. I liked the G800 (also a 5meg camera)but the camera cover at the back protruded so that the phone was not flat when you put it down: that was the main reason I decided against it. Eventually I went for the Nokia 6110 Navigator - mainly because of the navigator.
But I am almost 100% convinced it is time to give a Samsung a try. I just hope I can afford the one that I eventually decide to settle for.

Omnia Profile setting and backlight
Submitted by Camilla (not verified) on Tue, 2008-10-28 09:46.Hi all,
I recently got my Omnia and am loving it. No problems with the GPS or setting it up. Couple other problems - the battery life is quite shocking and find I am charging daily .... is this normal ?
Also, I somehow changed my call settings and now it is permanently on silent even though I have changed the setting to "ring" .... any ideas how to fix this ?
Then lastly, I also somehow changed the backlight settings. The lighting always went off after a little while, but now it is permanently on and it is very annoying and am sure this will also use the battery .... please help.
Also, not found a pouch yet so am using a cellphone sock to stop the scratching.
Does anyone know of a comprehensive user manual as the manual you get with the phone and the one on the internet are the same, and not enough info in them ??
Thanks
Camilla

Samsung I900 Mobile Phone
Submitted by Marius Marais (not verified) on Wed, 2008-12-17 12:23.I recently upgraded my phone to the i900 and what a disappointment.
The salesperson at Vodacom , City Mall,Klerksdorp did not inform me that you require Vista or Windows 2007 to load the Carmen on your laptop. This also prevents me to synchronize the phone with laptop and to add information via blue tooth or cable.
As most of my clients still work with 2003 I can not upgrade to 2007. Needles to say I now have a phone that is not worth the money spend as I can not use the phone for its intended purpose.

Samsung Omnia
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 2009-01-14 11:36.Well I have had my Omnia for about 3 weeks and was really loving it until yesterday when while trying to open a file on it. It just stopped working, said storage critically low and other files might not work and froze. I switched it off and on again. Then it did not ask me for a pin, said no service and now I am phone less. I called the Samsung call centre which is just next door from me and only to be told to take it to Vodacare which is about 35 minutes away from me and will probably take the whole week to look at. I am crushed because a friend of mine who is in IT warned me and I went ahead and got it. More than anything I think it's the lousy service I received from Samsung.

I haven't taken it in to be fixed because the problem is intermittent & I can't make it happen.

I have to upgrade before the end of January. Now my first choice was the Omnia but after I finished reading the blogs I'm considering the Innov8.
Any advice?
What are the pro's and con's of the two different hansets?
Thx!!
RE: Innov8 vs Omnia
Submitted by palesa on Thu, 2009-01-22 11:46.I think it depends on how you work on your phone. I've been using an Innov8 in the last week or so and I have to say that it works quite well for me. I'm not all that keen on Windows Mobile but must admit that it probably works best for business people on the move. It syncs perfectly with your Windows PC and has document editing, etc.
The Innov8 is a lot more fun for me. The 8MP camera alone makes it my preferred choice. I'll post some of the videos and pics I've taken. It's also Symbian S60 so there are loads of apps available on the net to enhance it (and the list keeps growing).
I don't know man. It really depends on your preferences.

Omnia Pouch
Submitted by Mike Brits (not verified) on Fri, 2009-03-06 21:08.Shame on you Samsung. I've had my Omnia a week now and I'm thinking about marrying it.
It does everything I expected it to and have already thrown away my very well used filofax. BUT after visiting 16 cell shops in Durban I could not find a decent quality well fitting pouch. I have settled for the HTC standard pouch (for the TitynII) and it fits perfectly, is well designed and comfortable. But I shouldn't have had to use and HTC product for my Omnia.
By the way I also put on a Zagg Invisible shield which offers amazing protection. You can then throw away the stylus and use a ballpen with the nib retracted without damaging the screen. Takes a bit of getting used to coz it's a bit rubbery.
Be warned take plenty of time to fit the shield and remove ONE piece at at time from the template. They don't tell you that in the instructions.

Omnia almost there
Submitted by Milano Red (not verified) on Mon, 2009-03-16 21:29.I've had mine for three weeks now and it's going well. It's not hanging up on me like most HTC's, and it does some nice things. It synchronise nicely with my work email and calender through Intellisync while maintaining a Activesync synchronisation my Word and Exel files and contacts.
The almost there:
1. Receiving a call while navigating to a next destination causes the GPS to take a full ten minutes to re-collect itself and re-commences the navigation. Very frustrating when trying to find your way through Jo'burg! The GPS is really weak, if you don't mount it on the dash forget about getting and staying in touch with satelites.
2. The camara is quite comprehensive but lacks a proper flash (like some Sony Ericsons) so picture taking is only feasible in good light.
3. The 8GB theory thing is VERY misleading. Yes there is 8GB, BUT, only 100 MB are available for direct storage for normal program data storage such as contacts, calender, emails and others. So, on mine only 4MB remains... This gets full in a wink, causing it to freeze up at times that are per Murphy's law the most inconvenient.
4. They really tried hard to make the software such that you don't need the stylus; however, sometimes you would go twice as fast with it. I really miss it!!!
5. The Samsung on-screen keyboards are taking up most of the screen, leaving very little space for the application too see what you're actually typing.
It's a very nice phone, almost there!

Submitted by EbenVenter on Tue, 2009-03-17 08:53.Hi have this Omnia now for 10 days, actually this is my second in 10 days :-(
The battery life sucks... less than 10 calls in a day and the battery is dead...
When I set the power options that the device goes off when not connected to power, the screen goes black, after an hour or so i try to bring it to life by tapping the screen or the menu button, i can hear activity on the phone but the screen stays black, it even rings with an incoming call but still all black, the only way till now to revive it from this is to press the reset button on top of phone... is this normal?
RE: Battery Life
Submitted by mobi on Wed, 2009-03-18 22:59.Some Omnia users on the Blog have reported a significant increase in battery life after installing the latest firmware upgrade (see the Downloads section). You may want to try the same.
If you're not comfortable conducting the upgrade yourself, send it in to a Samsung-approved Repair Centre; list at http://www.samsungblog.co.za/support/service-centres
Battery Life
Submitted by Michael Brits (not verified) on Wed, 2009-04-01 14:56.My battery lasts about half a day so I tried to do a firmware upgrade as suggested here. But when I try to enter my version number it says it is invalid. So I went to Samall Business. Is there any other way I can sync my contacts.
Thanks

Battery life - how to fix
Submitted by gartho (not verified) on Thu, 2009-05-21 00:05.a) don't ask MTN in Cape Town - they don't even return calls (and only have a central switchboard, what a lousy setup)
b) go to power settings, Battery power and choose Turn off device (I set mine to 1 minute)
That sounds like it will switch the phone off - it doesn't - it only blanks the screen (totally black). Really really bad wording - it hould say Turn off backlight.
If a call comes in the screen will light up automatically. You can press the End call key to light the screen as well (if you check Turn on backlight box). All apps will keep running
My battery was going flat so fast that I was going to take the phone back - the above was pointed out to me by a colleague and he gets several days out of a charge. The screen otherwise chews the battery
Internet connection keeps disconnecting
Submitted by Darryl Betts (not verified) on Wed, 2009-06-03 16:05.Been having a problem that when using my Omnia as a modem my internet connection randomly switches off. This is a problem when downloading files as it is costing me part of my data bundle whenever this happens. Any help with this problem would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Omnia
Submitted by Disgruntled Alex (not verified) on Sat, 2009-07-04 09:40.Piece of rubbish, the battery hardly lasts for one day even if you don't use it at all, the gps is great if you are able to pick up satellites. The phone is incredibly slow, reading sms's is just ridiculous. The screen goes black at least once a day and you can hear the phone is still on but you have to turn it off to get the screen back again. It has loads of software problems which they are not able to fix. I have always had samsung phones because they have been reliable and fast and very easy to use, but because of the omnia I'm not going to get another samsung, as soon as my contract is over I'm getting the iphone. Don't buy the omnia, I promise you that you will regret it.!!!!!!!

Submitted by Audioray (not verified) on Tue, 2009-11-03 11:29.I have been using my Omnia for a year now. I like everything about it, even the OS, even the battery life. With the latest firmware it lasts 3 to 5 days depending on usage. Everyone should try the latest firmware first and then you can judge by yourself.
